1) What do I need to have academically to transfer?
For students with 24 or more college credits at the time of application, we are looking for a 2.5 cumulative GPA at the college level. For students with fewer than 24 college credits at the time of application, high school GP A and standardized test scores will be weighed more heavily.

2) What is the Admissions process?
(revised transfer admissions section)
Who: A transfer is a student who has previously attended another college as a full-time student.

Deadline: Transfer admissions are on a rolling basis, but it is strongly suggested that students apply prior to July 1 for the fall semester and prior to Nov 14 for the spring semester to allow for adequate processing time in Admissions, the Dean's Offices and in Student Financial Services.

To apply, please send the following documents:

  1. A completed application, either Iona's or the Common Application (including the Common Application Supplement at http://www.iona.edu/admis/pdfForms/Common_Application_Supplement.pdf
(Click here for the Iona College on-line Application)
  2. Essay/personal statement discussing why you are transferring and why you are choosing Iona. (250-500 words)
  3. Official transcripts from all colleges previously attended.
  4. An official high school transcript or equivalent GED report, regardless of credits attempted in college. (Official documents arrive at our Records Office in a sealed envelope from the issuing institution.)
  5. If you have attempted fewer than 24 college credits, SAT and ACT scores.
  6. $50 application fee.

Additional Steps For International Students:

  1. Official secondary school transcripts
  2. TOEFL scores. You must submit TOEFL scores if your first language is other than English, even if English has been the language of your instruction. If English is your first language, please submit SAT or ACT scores in place of the TOEFL.
  3. External examination results or leaving certificate appropriate to your country, such as "A-levels," CXC's, Baccalaureate or Abiturv (for students with fewer than 24 college credits attempted, as granted by WES).
  4. International transfer students must also supply an official transcript(s) of that work to World Educations Services (WES). WES will provide an evaluation of how we should interpret your previous work for transfer credit purposes. For information about sending your transcript about WES, click here.

3) What are the deadlines?
Transfer admissions are processed on a rolling basis, so there are no formal deadlines. It is, however, strongly recommended that students apply prior to July 1 for fall semester and prior to November 14 for spring transfer. These dates allow for adequate processing time in Admissions, as well as in the Deans’ offices (where transfer credit is evaluated) and in Student Financial Services.

4) When will I find out my admission status?
As transfer admissions are on a rolling basis, so are our decisions. As soon as your file is complete, we can make a decision and respond to you, generally within two-three weeks. Feel free to check with our Admissions Office on the status of your documents or decision at (914) 633-2502.

5) How many credits will I get in transfer?
This will vary by degree and depend on what you've taken. Generally speaking, courses that are equivalent to courses offered here, with a grade of "C" or better, are considered transferable. A maximum of 64 credits may be accepted upon transfer from all combined accredited two-year institutions and training programs. A maximum of 90 credits in total may be accepted in transfer from all combined accredited two- and four-year institutions and training programs. In all instances, transcripts will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis by the respective Dean's Office for the most beneficial use of credit.

However, not all degrees have room for every transferable credit; we recommend you contact us to make an appointment if you have concerns over your transfer credits. Email Brett Settles, Admissions Counselor, bsettles@iona.edu to discuss programs, transfer credits, or to get a preliminary, unofficial evaluation of your transcripts.

6) Will my Associate's degree help?
All transferring students with an earned Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree from an accredited institution who have also earned a cumulative GPA of 2.5 will have satisfied the Liberal Arts Core. (Specific major requirements are excepted and all students must fill the Philosophy and Religious Studies components of the Core.)

7) Is there housing for transfers?
There is greater demand for housing on the Iona campus than there is supply. Therefore, on-campus housing is normally limited to freshmen that live outside a reasonable commuting distance and housing for transfer students is rarely available. You can certainly apply for it on the application for admission, and if it's available, it is granted keeping credits attempted (the fewer the better here) and distance from the school (the farther the better) in mind. Check out the Residential Life page for more information about our campus housing.

Nearly all of our upperclassmen live in off-campus housing, most of which is within walking distance of the campus. How do you find this housing, particularly if you're not from the area, and how do you find roommates that you're going to be able to live with? We may be able to help! The Iona College website (http://www.iona.edu/studentlife/residentiallife/housing.cfm) has information on the area, how to pick a roommate, and a list of realtors names and contact information.

In addition, we keep a database of any interested students, and we'll share the contact information of anyone seeking roommates with others who give us permission, allowing you time and opportunity to meet each other and find other transfers seeking a roommate for the coming year. Database information is given to admitted students only, and only on a voluntary basis. For more information on this, contact Brett Settles, Admissions Counselor, at bsettles@iona.edu

We know this is not exactly what you were hoping for, but if there is anything we can do to help you in this process, please let us know. All Iona students experience living off-campus, and still enjoy the benefits of being a residential student -- participating in the various campus clubs and activities, meeting new people and experiencing the community -- all while enriching themselves with a first-class education.

8) How much does Iona cost, and is there financial aid and/or scholarship money for transfers? What about international transfers?

Cost: Costs for the current 2008-09 academic year are as follows: Tuition and fees - $26,206*; Room and Board - $11,100. *Note: At Iona, there are no additional lab fees or course fees; everything is included in the comprehensive fee. (The only extra costs to be paid would be for books, an overseas experience, or a check returned for nonsufficient funds.)

Scholarships and financial aid are available for transfer students. Transfer Scholarships range from $3,000 to $9,000, and are based on prior academic performance. Athletic scholarships are at the discretion of the coach. All other financial aid will be based on the FAFSA form (every student must file the FAFSA in order to receive any aid, including academic and athletic scholarships). Follow this link for more financial aid information or forms.

If you are a member of Phi Theta Kappa or Alpha Beta Gamma, include in your application materials a letter from your chapter's faculty advisor stating that you are a member in good standing and you will receive an additional $1000 on top of your academic scholarship, raising the maximum to $10,000!

For International Students:
I-20 and Visa Information
International student must also complete Iona College's Application for Form I-20. This will supply us with the information we need to determine if we can issue the Form I-20 in the U.S.C.I.S. SEVIS information system. The Application for Form I-20 provides us with biographical information about you and with information about how you will finance your education.

Once you receive an I-20 from Iona, you must pay the SEVIS fee of $100 and then you schedule an appointment to meet with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to apply for a visa.

International transfers can qualify for academic and athletic scholarships, but are not eligible for additional federal or state aid.
